The Loddon River has its headwaters in the Central Highlands of Victoria, between Daylesford and Woodend, and only 1 kilometre from the start of the Coliban River. It is the second longest river in Victoria and has many tributaries.

The quality of the fish found in the River Loddon is exceptionally good with specimen Barbel, Chub, Perch and Pike being the main target for keen anglers. Pleasure anglers can also find good sport from the Bream and Roach present with the occasional Trout or Carp being captured.

Contains abundant European carp, golden perch, numerous Murray cod, silver perch, redfin, tench, goldfish, Australian smelt, Murray River rainbowfish, eastern gambusia and freshwater catfish in the lagoons. An excellent angling water.

Bream can be found towards the junction with St Pats, as well as good chub and barbel. Moving upstream into the main field, the swims up to the power lines are good for barbel and chub, with the swims along the high bank providing roach, chub and bream as the main quarry.

The best fishing area in this section of river between Serpentine and Loddon Weir is in the backwaters of Loddon Weir. Note that Murray cod and golden perch are stocked from Newbridge to Kerang.

It drops about five feet before joining the River Loddon, which then flows back into the Thames, bypassing Shiplake Lock, so the flow of water is a lot faster than on the Thames. This makes for a fun paddle with small eddies and is a great workout if you paddle back upstream.

Lake Daylesford is a man-made lake, originally a site of gold diggings, then later a Chinese market garden. The construction of the lake began in 1927 and is still used for many recreational activities.

Lake Daylesford is beautiful. Lots of photo opportunities as you walk around it. I also hired a kayak and paddled around the lake. $30 for 30 mins is quite expensive but was definitely worth it!

Can you swim in the Werribee River?

Have a dip at Needles Beach or keep going until you reach the biggest rock pool, Blackwood. You could find yourself swimming with platypuses — if you do, grab a snap and let Parks Victoria know.
