Willie Nelson has been a force in country music for almost 50 years since the critical success of the album Shotgun Willie back in 1973. Since then, he’s consistently produced music that created his lengthy, award-winning career. He’s responsible for having written some of the most popular and memorable country songs of all time, many of which have been covered by a wide range of artists over the last half century.
Now in his 80s, Nelson continues to record and tour. Believe it or not, this is Willie’s 17th #1 record on the Country Albums chart, and sixth Top 10 on the Billboard 200. “God’s Problem Child,” which features a song inspired by the 2016 election and another song written by producer Buddy Cannon’s mother, sold 36,000 equivalent albums, with 34,000 in pure sales.
Since this is his 17th #1 record, it boosts him to the title of second-most chart-topper! He passes Garth Brooks and Merle Haggard, each with 16. George Strait leads with a whopping 26 #1s on the chart, a record which looks as though it may never be broken.
One thing is for sure, Nelson updates his status as the oldest living artist to crown Top Country Albums every year he keeps beating the odds and gets back up on stage. He was born April 29, 1933, meaning he just celebrated his 84th birthday. Can you believe a country music star born in the 1930’s could stay relevant on the charts for this long?
Only Willie Nelson…
