Things aren’t always what they seems , and you never know what’s going on behind the curtain until somebody pulls it back. This is especially true when it pertains to personal relationships and marriages. Jana Kramer spoke with People Magazine, and revealed some shocking details about her first marriage, to Michael Gambino.
Kramer married Gambino, 17 years her senior, in 2004 two weeks after meeting at a coffee shop. “He was a smooth-talker, very charming, intriguing and obviously older,” Kramer said. Although things started out peachy, after their nuptials things changed. “He’d come home at 3 o’clock in the morning and pick me up out of bed, throw me onto the ground and start yelling and hitting,” Kramer recalls. “Then the next morning he’d be like, ‘Hey, baby,’ as if nothing had happened.”
Domestic violence is a repeating cycle and continues to grow worse as the relationship continues. Kramer would sleep in her car and hide until Gambino calmed down, and after multiple instances finally tried to leave. “When I said, ‘I can’t do this anymore,’ he sent me a photo of my dogs on the freeway and said, ‘I’m going to let them go if you don’t come home,’” Kramer remembers. “He’d kick me out of the house, I’d sleep in the car, and then that next morning I’d be with him in bed again.”
Moving On With Life…
It reached it’s pinnacle on Aug. 5th, 2005 Gambino choked Kramer unconscious and left her bleeding outside their home. He would ultimately be arrested, convicted of attempted murder, and sentenced to six years in prison. Released in 2010, Gambino ended up committing suicide in 2012.
“I’m so embarrassed and afraid no one will love me because of my past, but I’m ready to put it out there now,” Kramer confesses. “If I can help one person, I’ll be thankful for what happened — and I can move forward.”
It’s a process to overcome these life changing moments, but all wounds heal with time. Hopefully her story can help others see what can happen, and get out of abusive relationships before it’s too late.
